Plans to convert Golden Bear at 1620 San Pablo Ave into supportive housing for our unhoused neighbors are moving forward. Right now they are looking at 44 studio-sized apartments with onsite supportive services for the residents and case management provided by BACS and lots of funding from the state level through Project Homekey.
Quick Facts
44 homes (former motel rooms)
transit-accessible & walkable
on-site staff 24/7 + supportive services
no major construction planned but some remodeling will be done before move-in
NIMBY neighbors are mad that city council unanimously gave the green light for the Golden Bear motel to become permanent homes for the formerly unhoused.
If you can, send a note of support to Timothy.Lawless@hcd.ca.gov and homekey@hcd.ca.gov before January 31, 2022. Your message does not need to be lengthy or particularly eloquent, anything at all in the positive is good.
Here's some talking points to help your communication
The bay area has a severe shortage of homes that are clean, safe, and affordable to very low and no-income people, let's put them in homes.
Our future neighbors could have substance abuse issues, trauma, mental health issues and BACS has a long track record of helping people in these situations. In fact, being housed really helps with recovery and stability.
This is a great location where residents can take the 52 or the 72 or even BART, and the 9th st bike blvd is nearby too. Many other supportive homes don't have this accessibility.
These would be permanent homes, and I'm happy to invite at least 44 new neighbors to my neck of the woods.
The new neighbors can have pets with them, which is something many temporary housing solutions don't allow.
This individual project will not solve homelessness, but it could be the catalyst to change 44+ people's lives for the better and that sounds like a win to me.
I don't think 44 new homes will make my neighborhood worse, in fact I am looking forward to revitalizing our corner with fresh faces who are happy to be here.
